What to add fats and honey to

When on the SCDiet it’s sort of hard to enjoy your food while trying to gain weight. Eating coconut oil off a spoon will do the trick but is quite gross. Trying to eat extra fats and honey all the time makes my appetite shrink before my next meal. So here are my ideas for what to add fats and honey to:

-any leftovers being warmed up, put a pat of butter on top to add flavor and keep it moist
-any cooked vegetables taste good with butter

Coconut oil
Trickier than butter, unless you really like the taste of it (I don’t). It hides decently well in:
-any curry or heavily spiced dish
-anything with a thick sauce, if you’re making home made gravy etc
-mixed with honey on a spoon (about 1 tbsp coconut oil per 1 tsp honey)

Olive oil
-drizzle over avocado or any vegetables
-surprisingly good with hard boiled eggs & avocado
-good with any tomato product, ketchup, soup, tomato sauce

-warmed up leftover dark meat chicken, this reminds me of old-style McDonalds chicken nuggets I used to eat with honey as a kid
-drizzle over fruit, particularly good over berries

    I’ve been checking out your SCD food blog and found it really useful. Thanks a ton for creating this site. About a month ago I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease and have recently started the SCD diet, which I’m really hopeful will help me.

    My question for you is about the start of the diet. I have the book BTVC and have been strictly following the intro diet and now adding a few items. Can you tell me a bit about how long it took for the diet to work for you (i.e. get passed your symptoms)? My major symptom is D and it’s hard to know if adding foods is ok or not because that symptom has not gone away.

  2. Hi Ryan,

    I didn’t start off with the intro diet right away. The first 2 months I just cut stuff out of my regular diet until I was mostly SCD compliant. Later on I did the intro diet and added foods one at a time. Even when I did that I had problems figuring out what foods were bothering me. For example, I added nut butters and did fine for up to 2 weeks at a time but then all of a sudden I would be having D everyday. It wouldn’t go away until I got rid of the nuts. My symptoms did improve a lot over the first 6 months, but almost a year later I’m still making little tweaks here and there. All I can say is stay patient and keep playing around with your diet and adding/removing SCD legal foods. Some things to wait on are cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cabbage etc) and too much fiber (nuts, carrots, squash, leafy greens – keep them to small portions).

    The thing that has helped the most with D has been chicken stock made from organic chicken (check that it looks like jello when you put it in the fridge). Nothing beats it. Also for energy, I find liver, cheese and eggs are wonderful.
